Frequently Asked Questions on Import Export Code Registration
The government charges a flat fee of Rs. 500 for IEC registration, paid online through the DGFT portal at the time of application. This is one of the cheapest business registrations in India. Our professional assistance charges are separate and covers the filing, document preparation and follow-up on the DGFT portal until the IEC is issued. Be careful of websites that charges thousands of rupees just for what is a Rs. 500 government fee process.
The document requirement is minimal compared to most registrations:
- PAN card of the applicant, individual, firm or company
- Aadhaar card or passport of the proprietor, partners or directors
- Address proof of the registered office, electricity bill, rent agreement or property document
- Bank account details, cancelled cheque or bank certificate with account number and IFSC
- A valid email address and mobile number linked to Aadhaar for OTP verification
Digital Signature Certificate (DSC), required only for companies and LLPs
In most cases where the documents is correctly submitted and Aadhaar OTP verification is completed, the IEC code is generated on the DGFT portal almost instantly or within the same working day. In some cases, the application may goes for manual review which can take 2 to 3 working days. The IEC certificate can be downloaded directly from the DGFT portal after the code is issued, there is no physical certificate that needs to be collected.
IEC itself does not expire and does not require renewal. However, since April 2021, DGFT has made it mandatory to update or confirm your IEC details once every year between April and June, even if there are no changes. If this annual update is not done, the IEC gets deactivated. Reactivation is possible but it adds unnecessary hassle. We remind our clients about this annual update requirement so their IEC always stays active.
Any business entity can obtain IEC, sole proprietors, partnership firms, LLPs, Private Limited Companies, OPCs and even individuals. For a sole proprietorship, the IEC is issued in the name of the proprietor linked with their PAN. There is no minimum turnover or size requirement. Even a freelancer exporting services abroad or a small trader importing goods for their shop can and should get an IEC if they are doing cross-border transactions.
No. A single IEC is valid for all products, all ports and all states across India. There is no restriction on the type of goods or services you can trade under one IEC, unless specific goods are under a restricted or prohibited category under the Foreign Trade Policy. You do not need separate codes for different products or different locations. One PAN, one IEC, is the basic principle.
Yes, the same IEC code works for both import and export operations. There is no separate code for importers and exporters. Once you have your IEC, you can use it for importing raw materials or machinery, for exporting finished goods, for receiving foreign payments for services rendered, or for all of the above simultaneously. The code itself does not restrict the direction of trade.
Attempting to import or export without a valid IEC means your consignment will be held at customs and will not be cleared. The customs authority will simply not process the shipment without a valid IEC. For service exporters, banks will not be able to process foreign inward remittances under the correct head without IEC details. In short, cross-border trade without IEC registration is not just difficult, it is not possible through legal channels.
